An Archer man barricaded himself in a Gainesville apartment early Tuesday morning, which led to a seven-hour long police standoff.
Gainesville Police Department Officer Melissa Fuentes saw a white man, later identified as Austin Gregory Dow, 20, and attempted to speak with him during a foot patrol at 2 a.m. at Horizon House Apartments, 1515 NW 10th St. The man immediately ran away. A MAC-10 model firearm, a type of machine pistol, was recovered from the scene where the man was seen, according to GPD spokesperson Sgt. Lisa Scott.
Shortly afterward, a woman was heard screaming from her apartment, “Get out of my apartment. Who are you?,” according to a GPD press release.
The woman, her three children and another juvenile fled the apartment. Video surveillance revealed two subjects, a white man and a black man, entering the apartment, but officers were not sure if one or two people remained inside, according to Scott.
The building was swarmed by officers, including Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Negotiation Response Teams, in an attempt to contact the unknown parties inside the apartment.
Nearly seven hours later, Dow surrendered to officers around 9:15 a.m. Dow had an active arrest warrant from Bradford County for violation of probation, carrying a concealed firearm and possession of drug paraphernalia. Dow was arrested and transported to GPD for questioning, according to Scott. No other subjects remained inside the apartment.
Dow was charged with carrying a concealed firearm. He remains in custody at the time of publication.
