A thick denim jacket saved a man from a butterfly knife wound in Midtown early Thursday morning, police said.

Antoine Angrum, 28, of Micanopy, is accused of lunging at a man and his brother as they were leaving the bar Balls, at 1600 W. University Ave., according to a Gainesville Police arrest report.

Angrum stabbed him with the 5-inch blade in the upper left chest, the report said. A witness told police Angrum laughed and walked away.

Angrum does not know the man he stabbed, the report said.

The knife punctured the man’s jacket and went through his shirt, the report said. The man was not injured, but he did have a small cut and some blood left of his nipple, the report said.

The knife would have severely injured him had it not been for his jacket, the report said.

The man called 911 and told officers who were patrolling the area to stop Angrum.

Angrum denied stabbing the man and possessing a knife, the report said.

He is charged with aggravated battery and was released from the Alachua County Jail that day at about 2 p.m. on a $75,000 bond.

Angrum could not immediately be reached for comment.
