Gainesville Police used a stun gun on an 18-year-old man after he was accused of having two empty guns and resisting an officer Tuesday night.
Kantrez E’vontay Mayberry, 18, of Gainesville, started recording a Facebook live video after he was stopped on the 100 block of Southeast 14 Street, according to an arrest report. He was accused of refusing to get out of his car and pulling away from officers.
While an officer was patrolling the area, he noticed a gold Toyota stopped in the middle of the road at about 10:35 p.m., the report said.
Mayberry backed up the car without using headlights and parked it on a yard, police said. The officer saw two people inside the car and smelled marijuana.
The officer asked Mayberry if lived on the property he parked on, the report said. Mayberry replied, “No, I was just getting a haircut.”
While standing by the driver’s door, the officer saw a blue and silver firearm in the door pocket. Mayberry got nervous and started recording a Facebook Live video on his phone, the report said. The Alligator could not find the video on Facebook.
More officers showed up and asked Mayberry to get out of the car, but he refused, the report said. The officer placed a handcuff on Mayberry’s left wrist.
Mayberry reached into the car as if he was looking for something or trying to get ahold of the passenger seat headrest to avoid being pulled out of the car, the report said.
Two officers got him out of the car, but Mayberry continued to pull away while police tried to handcuff him. An officer used a stun gun on him, the report said.
Mayberry repeatedly told officers and paramedics who checked on him that his name was Marquis Brown, the report said.
The teenager ignored the officer when he asked for an ID card, police said. Mayberry’s mother later arrived and told officers Mayberry’s name.
Officers searched the car and found a black and pink gun in the driver’s seat pocket, the report said. Mayberry told officers that the guns belonged to a friend and one of the guns didn’t work.
Mayberry also told officers he wasn’t going to “snitch” on anyone and would take the charges “as a man,” police said.
Mayberry was charged with having concealed guns, resisting an officer and giving a fake identity. He also received traffic citations for driving the car without headlights. He is being held at the Alachua County Jail in lieu of a $26,500 bond.
