A man killed after breaking into a condominium did not know the homeowner who fatally shot him, according to police.
Gregory Miller, 52, was shot by an elderly man after breaking into a condominium at Whisperwood Apartments, at 4100 NW 28th Lane, wrote Gainesville Police spokesperson Ofc. Ben Tobias in an email. The homeowner, whose name was not released, called police around 7 a.m. after he shot a man for intruding.
Officers tried to revive Miller until paramedics arrived, Tobias said. Miller was pronounced dead at the scene.
Miller’s family members told police that Miller suffered from seizures, which have resulted in aggressive behavior in the past, Tobias said. Police are still investigating why Miller was inside the home.
“The situation is tragic all around, ” Tobias said.
No charges are planned as of yet, Tobias said. Police are waiting for the results of Miller’s autopsy and the medical examiner’s report to confirm the shooter’s story.
Sunday’s incident wasn’t the only fatal Gainesville apartment shooting this year. In February, Cedric Tremaine Plummer killed two people and kidnapped another in Summer Place Villas, according to court records. The state attorney’s office pursued the death penalty in Alachua County for the first time in three years.
