The sunshine and clear skies of the morning in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, became rain and lightning of the afternoon, forcing Day 4 of the NCAA Individual Tennis Championships to move indoors after three hours of rain delays.
Inside, however, Florida’s two remaining doubles teams in the event continued to have their parades rained on.
The No. 4-seeded duo of junior Alfredo Perez and sophomore Johannes Ingildsen were upset by the Memphis tandem of seniors Ryan Peniston and Andrew Watson. The Florida pair held a 4-2 lead in the first set but squandered it to lose 7-5. The Tigers’ duo then took advantage of the momentum to close the door on Gators’ team 6-3 to win in straight sets.
Perez and Ingildsen finish their 2017-2018 campaign with a 12-7 overall record together, including a 10-6 record in dual play and All-American honors thanks to the quarterfinals appearance in the Individual Championships.
UF’s duo of junior McClain Kessler and freshman Duarte Vale followed with another disappointing end to its season.
The pair was overpowered by Ohio State’s tandem of junior Martin Joyce and senior Mikael Torpegaard 6-3, 6-2. The duo finished its first season together with All-American honors as well as a 15-12 overall record with five conference wins.
The tandem also ends the season with 13 wins in dual play, which is good for second-most on the team.
