With a victory against UCLA’s Jessie Aney (6-4, 6-2) on Saturday, Florida freshman Victoria Emma punched her ticket to the semifinals of the Freeman Memorial Women’s Tennis Championships in Las Vegas. She was one step closer to her goal of winning the event’s singles tournament.
A few hours later, however, those hopes abruptly shattered.
Emma was defeated by UCLA’s Jada Heart in two sets (6-1, 6-4). While Hart will go on to face the No. 1 seed in the tournament in teammate Ena Shibahara, Emma’s run will end in the semifinals.
For the tournament’s consolation bracket, freshman McCartney Kessler and Katie Kubicz, along with senior Peggy Porter, competed on Saturday.
Kessler defeated UNLV’s Samantha Li (6-1, 6-0) and Marta Perez Mur of Texas (6-4, 6-4). However, she was disqualified from her semifinal match, ending her day.
Kubicz defeated Stanford’s Naomie Rosenberg in the first round (6-4, 6-3) before dropping her next match to Texas’ Petra Granic (6-3, 6-2). Porter went up against Pepperdine’s Evgeniya Levashova in the first round, but lost the match and did not advance (6-3, 6-2).
Kubicz and Porter teamed up on the doubles court, making it to the quarterfinal draw before losing to UNLV’s tandem of Anna Bogoslavets and Samantha Li (6-3).
Day 3 of the Freeman Memorial will kick off with doubles matches beginning at 10 a.m.
