Starting with a stop for cannabis, two men are accused of running from officers and a patrol helicopter Tuesday night, the Gainesville Police Department said. One of the men broke inside a stranger’s apartment and jumped out of a second-story window in an attempt to flee.
An officer stopped Quavonte Nobles, 24, and Aundre Ryles, 31, at about 7 p.m. in their car in Village Green Apartments on Northeast 15th Street, police said. When the two exited the car, the officer smelled cannabis and requested backup.
When a second officer arrived, Nobles and Ryles ran in different directions, officials said. After a foot chase and struggle, an officer arrested Ryles. The Joint Aviation Unit helicopter arrived and provided the ground officers with Nobles’ location.
Nobles illegally entered an apartment, leaving the people who lived in the apartment outside, officials said. The apartment residents called authorities, saying their 6-month-old child was inside.
When officers arrived in the apartment, Nobles broke a second-floor window and jumped out, authorities said. Officers then arrested him after some physical resistance.
Authorities found three loaded handguns and various narcotics in their car, police said.
Nobles was on probation at the time of the incident for a previous gun conviction, officials said. He now faces charges of violating probation, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon, battery on a law enforcement officer, burglary, criminal mischief and possession of a controlled substance.
Ryles was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, possession with intent to sell 3 to 4 ounces of cannabis within 1,000 feet of a school, trafficking at least 12 grams of ecstasy and resisting with violence, authorities said.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Nobles is being held without bond at the Alachua County Jail and Ryles is being held at the jail in lieu of a $85,000 bond, according to online court records.
