A Gainesville man was arrested for breaking into a car and stealing three guns after the car owner found the man’s cellphone in his car, Gainesville Police said.
Andrew Jay McNally, 30, was seen by witnesses who were leaving Saturday’s UF football game at about 3:11 p.m. McNally was wrapping rifles in a jacket near Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and was reported to police, according to an arrest report.
Responding officers found McNally in the middle of the road on Northwest 20th Street near a cooler that contained a Glock pistol and had two hunting rifles on top of it, according to the report.
A man at the scene said his car had been broken into and his hunting rifles were missing.
He identified the three guns as his and estimated the value of the weapons as $2,600, according to the report. He also gave police a black cellphone he said he found in the back seat of his car.
One witness saw McNally in the car, and another told police he was the resident of the home the car was parked at and said McNally came onto his property and told him he parked there, according to the report. The resident said the car that was broken into was parked there for the game.
McNally told police he didn’t break into the car or steal the guns. He gave police his phone number, which matched the number of the cell phone left in the car.
McNally, who was convicted of a felony for dealing in stolen property in 2010, was arrested on charges of burglary, grand theft and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. He was taken to the Alachua County Jail where he remains, as of press time, in lieu of a $175,000 bond.
