Two Gainesville women were arrested Sunday afternoon after they attempted to steal 77 items from Walmart, Gainesville Police Department said.

Tierra Lashay-Denice Lewis, 28, and Sierra Monique Curtis, 23, entered the Walmart, located at 1800 N.E. 12th Ave., at about 2:20 p.m. and filled their shopping cart with various items, according to an arrest report.

At self-checkout, Lewis and Curtis pretended to scan the items and placed them into shopping bags. The two women did properly scan some grocery items, which were purchased with Curtis’ electronic benefit transfer card, according to the report.

Police said Lewis and Curtis passed all points of sale without paying for the remaining 77 items, which had a combined total of about $555. The two were detained by a Gainesville Police officer and a Walmart loss prevention officer.

Lewis and Curtis admitted to police they stole the items, according to the report. Both were arrested on charges of grand theft. The pair was taken to Alachua County Jail.
Lewis remains in jail, as of press time, in lieu of a $3,000 bond. Curtis was released on her own recognizance Monday afternoon.

Curtis could not be reached for a comment.
