A Gainesville man was arrested for a car burglary Friday after several burglaries were reported at the same place and time, Gainesville Police said.
Ferrie Vashaun Cook Jr., 20, was seen by a witness at about 4:36 a.m. walking in a parking lot at 3425 SW 29th Terrace with another man, according to an arrest report.
A responding officer spotted the men walking in the parking lot and hid behind a car, according to the report. When the officer jumped out from behind the car, both suspects ran away.
The unknown suspect jumped a fence and fled west while Cook ran north across Southwest 35th Place, according to the report. A police dog tracked and found Cook in the woods nearby.
When Cook was detained, he had a red backpack on him, which contained about $500 of belongings including purses, jewelry, tech gear, a window punch and a Taser, police said. Officers also found hydrocodone prescribed to someone else on Cook and glass shards in his pants pocket.
Officers suspect Cook in at least five more car burglaries that occurred in the same area and time, police said.
Cook was arrested on charges of burglary, petty theft, possession of burglary tools, grand theft of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest. Authorities took him to the Alachua County Jail where he remains, as of press time, in lieu of a $132,000 bond.
