A one-story house caught on fire Sunday night, resulting in one person being taken to the hospital.
Gainesville Fire Rescue and Alachua County Fire Rescue responded to reports of a home, located on the 3100 block of Southwest Archer Road, on fire at 8:15 p.m. Sunday. The flames were visible from the road, according to a GFR press release. Initial reports indicated someone was in the house.
Firefighters found a resident outside of the building, and he was treated and taken to UF Health Shands Hospital’s emergency room. Firefighters did not find anyone inside the home and extinguished the fire within a few minutes, according to the press release.
The fire’s cause is still under investigation, GFR said. The extent of damage to the building is unknown.
As firefighter trucks and police cars swarmed the road in front of the house, a man stood outside and watched.
The man, who declined to give his name to an Alligator reporter, said the home belonged to his father, and his uncle was the resident who was taken to the hospital. He said his father inhaled smoke from the fire and was fine, but his uncle inhaled too much.
“He got lots of smoke in his lungs,” the man said.
