A Gainesville man, who was arrested on unrelated charges, is being questioned by police for a shooting Monday afternoon near the Linton Oaks neighborhood that sent a 28-year-old resident to the hospital.

No suspect has been identified in relation to the shooting, said Lt. Becky Butscher, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

Police found Brandon Xavier James, 27, after an hourlong search for a possible suspect near the shooting, which happened at the 6200 block of Southwest 10th Place at about 2 p.m. Monday.

At first, James was questioned for information on the shooting until police found he had an active search warrant for outstanding charges, at which point they arrested him, ACSO spokesperson Sgt. Chris Sims said.

He was arrested on charges including resisting an officer during arrest, possession of a weapon as a convicted felon and marijuana possession under 20 grams. As of press time, James remains in Alachua County Jail in lieu of a $195,000 bond.

The victim was sitting on the driveway outside his apartment home before he was shot twice, Butscher said. The gunman was armed with a small caliber handgun and fired three shots at the victim.

Police are still going over leads for a possible suspect, she said. The victim went into surgery Monday evening. His current state is unknown as of press time.
