UF, JCPenney help students buy professional clothing

UF students will be able to get 40 percent off career clothing at JCPenney thanks to a UF partnership.

The UF David F. Miller Retail Center and The Oaks Mall JCPenney have teamed up for the first Suit Up event. Students and faculty with a valid Gator 1 Card can shop from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, to purchase professional clothing, said Cecilia Schulz, the director of student programs at the Miller Retail Center.

“Whether you are seeking an internship or a career, you need to dress professionally and professionally basically means wearing a suit,” Schulz said. “So, if these folks can help these students dress professionally in order to pursue their dreams, then more power to them.”

UF students can also borrow professional clothing through the Gator Career Closet, which opened in July. Holly Hagans, a 20-year-old UF criminology junior, thinks it’s better to own the clothes than rent them. She wants clothing for the upcoming career showcase  Sept. 26 and Sept. 27.

“If you get a job that requires you to wear business clothes every day, you want to own them,” Hagans said.

Joseph Gonzalez, a 20-year-old UF political science and philosophy junior, said this is a great opportunity for UF students to buy business clothing at an affordable price.

“I consider our generation to be the children of the Great Recession,” Gonzalez said. “We’re always on the hunt for a discount.”
