An Alachua County Jail inmate faces charges after he attacked a fellow inmate Monday, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office said.

Daniel LaVaughn Jerkins, 31, rushed at a fellow inmate at about 1:38 p.m., lifted him off the floor and  began choking him, according to an arrest report.

Police noticed marks around the victim’s neck and chest consistent with being choked.

When deputies asked Jerkins about the incident, he told them they could watch surveillance video of the incident and refused to speak without a lawyer, according to the report.

Jerkins was arrested Friday by Gainesville Police on a charge of contempt of court after violating a domestic restraining order, according to a GPD arrest report. The restraining order was from December 2016.

He was being held at the jail in lieu of a $25,000 bond.

After the choking, Police charged Jerkins with battery in a jail facility. He remains at the jail, as of press time, in lieu of a $35,000 bond.
