A Gainesville woman was arrested Friday night after crashing into a handicap parking sign in the Select Specialty Hospital parking lot, Gainesville Police said.
Sandra A. Walker, 62, did not move her gold 2004 Ford Explorer after the crash and proceeded to walk into the hospital, located at 2708 SW Archer Road, to visit her husband, who has brain and lung cancer. She spilled smoothies on the hospital floor, according to an arrest report.
Walker told a responding police officer she crashed into the sign because she was driving with her left foot and hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal. While Walker was talking, the officer noticed she slurred her words and had bloodshot, watery eyes, according to the report.
She told the officer she drank two glasses of wine and took her prescription pain reliever Oxycodone about five hours before the crash. She also said she placed a prescription pain reliever patch on her chest about eight hours before the crash, according to the report.
Walker was arrested for driving under the influence and damaging property. She was released on her own recognizance Saturday afternoon.
Her blood alcohol content was .061 and .063, which is below the legal limit.
Walker said she was embarrassed by the incident but didn’t feel it was fair she was arrested.
“I’m really not understanding why things turned out the way they did that evening,” Walker said.
