Evelyn Foxx’s early-morning walks with her friend Meg usually go uninterrupted, but Monday morning she stepped outside her house to a crumpled-up Confederate flag on her property.

Foxx, the president of the NAACP’s Alachua County branch, said she left her house at about 6:30 a.m. and noticed the flag immediately.

“It was right on my front lawn,” she said.

Foxx called police at about 6:48 a.m., and officers are investigating the issue, wrote Gainesville Police spokesperson Officer Ben Tobias in an email.

“We are looking into the incident more before we make a determination on the actual crime,” Tobias said.

Foxx said she’s disappointed about the presence of the flag — but not surprised. Having first assumed her role as president in 2010, Foxx said she’s had her life threatened a number of times.

She said she sees Monday morning’s incident as both an attack on her character and her organization.

“I’m very, very upset to walk out of my door and find something like that on the day before the 4th of July,” Foxx said.
