UF’s Student Senate held its first meeting of the Summer on Tuesday, where they elected a new member-at-large.
Anmol Shah, a UF finance sophomore, was unanimously voted in after a five-minute Q&A period. There were no other candidates.
The questions Senate members asked included why Shah was interested in serving as a member-at-large and what excites her most about being a member-at-large.
Shah said topics that are most important to her are inclusivity, tolerance, respect and impartiality.
The members-at-large are part of the Replacement and Agenda Committee. They have the final say on agendas and interview replacement senators.
Twenty-one new senators for Summer A and Summer C terms were also introduced at the meeting.
New Senate seat positions were advertised at the April 18 meeting, said President Pro-tempore Trevor Schaettle, a 21-year-old UF history senior.
One of the new senators is Cole Gabriel, a 21-year-old UF accounting senior and the Graduate and Family Housing senator.
“I’m passionate about serving my fellow students,” Gabriel said. “My objective is to make sure that they’re (Student Government) speaking for this minority that is graduate students, because even if they’re only here for a year, their needs are still really important as students.”
When determining who gets to serve on Senate, Schaettle said his committee looks for the most qualified and passionate students. He said about 100 applicants were denied.
“Summer C is a great opportunity for people to get their feet wet throughout Senate,” he said.
