A spiritual teacher and psychologist talked about how they came together to combine their studies

Tuesday in the Reitz Union. Michael Singer, author of the book “The Untethered Soul,” and Trish Ring, psychologist and equine coach at Blue Star Ranch, a ranch where Ring provides her form of therapy in Cashiers, North Carolina, talked with about 100 people in a Reitz Union meeting room. The two discussed how people can use spirituality to address emotional concerns.

Singer explained how people can practice mindfulness to learn from good and bad experiences in their lives.

“It’s not about how to make yourself feel mindful. Mindfulness is your natural state,” he said.

Ring said when people combine spirituality and psychological practices, they become more

rested and soothed.

“The work I have done as a psychologist is informed by my own spiritual journey, and that the work that I do in psychology is actually a portal to my own spiritual growth,” Ring said.

Ring said while her and Singer have different theories, they end up with the same conclusions.

Veronica Paz, a UF international studies freshman, said she read Singer’s book two weeks ago and thought it was inspiring.

“He has helped my family through a lot, so I was excited to hear what he has to say,” the 18-year-old said. “I want to just hear what he has to say so I can pass it on to my family and friends.”
