“Sign of the Times” — Harry Styles
In the weeks leading up to the release of Harry Styles’ new single, fans and critics wondered what sound the former One Direction member would adopt now that he is a solo artist. Predictions that the song would be an ode to Prince’s “Sign o’ the Times,” that he would stick to his roots or even develop an eclectic sound flooded the internet.
Thankfully, his song “Sign of the Times,” did not disappoint. The track resembles the style of David Bowie circa ‘70s, and it could best be described as a mashup of “Life on Mars” and “Starman.”
The almost six-minute track seems endless at times, but Styles’ voice is melodious as he croons, “Just stop your crying, have the time of your life.”
The slow tempo of the lead-in allows Styles to stretch his vocal power and range.
I will admit I was skeptical of this track, but as a Styles original, it introduces us to his songwriting and capability as a solo artist.
“Heatstroke” — Calvin Harris feat. Pharrell, Young Thug and Ariana Grande
I’m not sure how this collaboration works, but I can’t help but tap my foot while listening to this track. Electronic dance music artist Calvin Harris blends sounds from across decades and music genres to create a great track to jam out to.
Pharrell’s voice in the chorus sounds like something out of a Jackson 5 song, Ariana Grande’s vocals lend a ’60s-like sound, and rapper Young Thug brings a modern element to the track. Normally this variation in sounds would crowd the track, but it works.
“Die With You” — Beyonce
Beyonce celebrated her wedding anniversary in the best fashion — by releasing new music. Along with a 63-song playlist exclusive to Tidal, Beyonce debuted her new single “Die With You” on Instagram.
The track and accompanying video is an ode to her husband, rapper Jay-Z, and gave fans a glimpse into the singer’s personal life. Beyonce has an ability to release tracks that empower women, like “Run the World” and “Formation,” but can also sing with great vulnerability, unlike any other artist.
Despite the frustration I feel because the song is exclusive to Tidal, it’s worth a listen and further proves that Beyonce is the queen.
“Memories...Do Not Open” — The Chainsmokers
After the release of “Something Like This” in February, the Chainsmokers are back with a new album — and it was quite difficult to listen to.
Although the album boasts a handful of collaborations with artists from across the music spectrum, none of them are good. “Last Day Alive,” their track with country duo Florida Georgia Line, gave listeners proof that EDM and country do not blend.
The song itself sounds like a careless replica of Fun’s “Some Nights,” and it only shows fans that the Chainsmokers are not in the market to release original material.
Unless you have a craving to listen to EDM or need some white noise in the background, I would skip this album.
