French DJ Tchami to perform at Florida Theater

This Saturday, French house music producer Tchami will be performing at the Florida Theatre in downtown Gainesville. He will be joined by Canadian producer Angelz, Alex Wood, Side Trakd and Blac Bear.

Tchami’s show in Gainesville is part of his two-month long North American Prophecy Tour, to which he brings a unique church-style stage setup. Tchami is the self-proclaimed pioneer of “Future House” music, which blends elements of electronic dance music with deep house music. With his European roots, Tchami will bring a truly unique house music performance to this small Florida city.

“I’m looking forward to going out and hearing live music from a foreign and respected house artist,” said Tom Kane, a 21-year-old UF history junior. “It will be a nice change from going to the same bars that play the same music every weekend.”

Though fellow French house music producer Mercer was set to accompany Tchami on his shows around North America, the Florida dates of the tour will see Angelz, a Canadian artist opening for Tchami instead.

Anglez, whose real name is Henry Verreault, has never played in Gainesville before but is quite popular in Miami. About two years ago, Angelz released a deep house music rendition of rapper Stitches’ track “Mail.” This remix got a lot of play in Miami because of Stitches’ popularity in his hometown.

Angelz performed at Miami Music Week last March and was welcomed by fans who found him through his remix.

“The first song I put out that got super popular was a remix of this song ‘Mail’ by this Miami rapper, Stitches,” Angelz, 25, said. “I turned his gangster rap track into a deep house song.”

Angelz is also on Tchami’s new record label, Confession. This label put out Angelz’s “Saint Thug” extended play in 2016 and “Hey Girl” single in 2015. Artists like Angelz and Tchami are part of a music scene based around innovations in house music, techno music, bass music and EDM.

“I think Tchami and I working together is the greatest representation of what is happening in the current world of house music,” Angelz said. “We are carrying the house scene around and shaping its sound.”

General admission is $25, and $30 buys access to express entry into the venue and an elevated viewing area of the stage.

The event is set to to run from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
