Small-business owners interested in developing their companies will take part in a free, UF-led workshop today.

The workshop, hosted by UF’s Small Business and Vendor Diversity Relations, is scheduled to take place every month throughout the year, said Kathey Porter, the department’s director.

The program aims to serve as a budget-friendly alternative to similar workshops, with the hopes that participants gain valuable skills and connections needed to run their companies.

“I think that for small businesses, you don’t always have the luxury to take on or go to expensive workshops on business and business development,” Porter said. “So this is our opportunity to provide free access to information that they might not be able to readily

get.”

Workshops will be located at 2046 NE Waldo Road, Suite 3201, according to the department’s website.

In November, the office will assess how business owners benefitted from the workshops to determine whether to continue the program.

About 25 business owners registered for today’s workshop Porter said.

Business owners can register for the workshops on the department’s website or by calling its main line at 352-392-0380.

Charlotte Mendez, 46, the owner of Cleaning Genie LLC, which is comprised of social workers helping displaced homemakers, said she’s attending the first workshop to develop her business.

“I’m currently in the startup mode of my company, and I needed more rounded insight as to how to properly operate my business,” she said.
