A UF alumna is one of five finalists competing to get her board game published through Hasbro.
Kelly North Adams, 31, a board game designer from Orlando, designed and entered the game Chibi Quest! in Hasbro’s “Next Great Family Game Challenge” in hopes it one day appears on store shelves. To play her game, players control big-headed figurines called “chibis” that fight fictional monsters, she said.
To create the game, North Adams worked with Spanish artist Mibu-no-ookami, who specializes in drawing the figures.
“When you get a game, a lot of times the artwork is very secondary,” said North Adams, who graduated from UF in 2006. “But with this game, the game portion is really awesome, but the artwork is also really cool. They work hand in hand.”
Hasbro’s competition is hosted on Indiegogo.com, an entrepreneur website, North Adams said. Whichever competitor gets the most people to donate on the website wins.
The last day to vote is Feb. 12, and the winner will be announced in March, she said.
Joe North, North Adams’ brother, said he is excited his sister has the opportunity to introduce her game to the world.
“I have a 5-year-old son, and I think it would be really cool to go to ToysRUs and see a box that has his aunt’s name on it,” the 35-year-old said.
