Following the start of the holiday shopping season, Gainesville nonprofits hope they are the recipients in a global day of giving.
Giving Tuesday, an initiative started five years ago, asks people to give their money to charities and those in need instead of buying items. Alachua County’s chapter of Take Stock in Children, a scholarship and mentoring program, is asking for $20 donations.
Luisana Segu, the Take Stock in Children mentor and alumni coordinator, said giving is especially important to the program. Take Stock in Children aims to give a $4,000 scholarship to each child who completes the program.
“We targeted our mentors that are invested in the program, and they each have a student, so that they can see the impact that the program is having,” she said.
Victoria Alvarez, a case manager at the Saint Francis House, said it’s important to donate to help children in need. Even if people can’t give money, Alvarez said they can give their time.
“Even something small is helpful, even if it’s just an ear to someone who needs to talk — something that can go so far,” she said.
Jonathan Iyar, a UF business junior, said he hopes others participate in Giving Tuesday.
“It’s a good idea during the holidays, because when you’re surrounded by your family and loved ones, you think about all of the ones who are in a situation that that’s not possible,” the 20-year-old said.
