Mustang cut in half, driver critically injured after crash

Gainesville Police are investigating a Wednesday night car accident that left a Mustang in half and its driver critically injured.

At about 8:30 p.m., a 27-year-old man driving the Ford Mustang attempted to pass several cars at a high rate of speed, eventually losing control and veering into oncoming traffic in the 6200 block of Southwest 20th Avenue, according to a GPD media release.

The man, who has not been identified, then crashed into an oncoming SUV, which literally cut the Mustang in half. The accident caused life-threatening injuries to the man, and minor injuries to the driver of the SUV, according to the release.

Both were taken to an unspecified hospital.

GPD is conducting a full traffic homicide investigation, which is routine in crashes with life-threatening injuries, department spokesman Ben Tobias said.
