Logic is currently on The Endless Summer Tour with G-Eazy, Yo Gotti and YG. At their show in Tampa this past Sunday, I, along with my good friend David Spreen, were able to sit down with Logic on his tour bus and talk about his latest project “Bobby Tarantino,” tour life, new music, traveling and more. Check out the highlights from my interview with Logic.
Jack DaSilva: You just dropped your mixtape “Bobby Tarantino” a couple of weeks ago, and I’m curious as to what it’s like to drop a project while on the road?
Logic: It’s funny you say that because I talk about this during the show. The crowd is just learning it (“Bobby Tarantino”). The crazy thing is, when I typically release music, I’ll release it, it’ll come out and then months later I’ll tour, and everyone knows the words already. With this, everybody’s excited, but they might not know all the words yet.
J: So do you record on the road?
L: I do, but not this time. I’m not doing any recording because I want to focus on just the tour, because touring is harsh. It’s harsh on your body, on your mind, and it’s insane because you’re going so hard. I think I’ve recorded on every tour I’ve ever done — tour bus wise — and I’m finally taking a break because after the albums and now this new mixtape, I have some time to just focus on this (tour). After this, I go to Europe for a while, and then after Europe, I come back and I have some off shows and different stuff like that, but for the most part, I’m just very excited to come back after all this and record in my crib.
David Spreen: What do you think has really changed since “Under Pressure” to “Bobby Tarantino”?
L: I think it’s just the relevance and the fact that being more in pop culture so more people know or recognize the name Logic, which is kind of awesome. I feel like it’s pretty different now because of the internet — like what is an “underground” rapper, you know? Like I don’t really know. I know I used to be one and I’m not really one anymore, but I’m in this weird place because of the internet. Like, I’m one of the most streamed artists in the world. It’s crazy. I’m really blessed to sell all these records. I just think there’s more fans and more people who are aware, which is pretty cool.
D: I loved “Under Pressure” and I love “Bobby Tarantino” and “Bobby Tarantino” is just as good but there’s a different vibe.
L: Oh yeah, it’s a different sound. The next album is going to be extra crazy. That’s like next year though.
Jack: Now, I’ve read that Quentin Tarantino is a huge influence on you and the way you make your albums. Your albums, they’re like stories or movies themselves. Not many artists will say that a movie director or film inspires them. I know you’re on the soundtrack for “Suicide Squad,” and I want to know how the “Sucker For Pain” song came together because of the different artists on there, and how it feels to be a part of a film score?
L: Well this guy whose name is Alex Da Kid — he’s the producer (of the single), and he works with Imagine Dragons — and he pretty much reached out to me and was like, “Hey I got this song, do you want to do it?” and I was like “sure,” but it was just the beat and the hook, so I didn’t know there was going to be all these other people on it. So originally I did two verses, and they ended up using the first verse but cutting some bars off that. That’s why everyone’s verse is so short — because there’s so many people on it. But yeah, it was crazy. It just kind of worked out, and I was out in LA to shoot the video, so it was awesome.
J: So when did you find out about the other featured artists (Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Imagine Dragons, Ty Dolla $ign and X Ambassadors)?
L: My manager just hit me up and was like, “Hey, all these people are on it,” and I was like, “Man that’s so cool.”
J: That’s so interesting. It’s definitely a unique lineup of artists, but it’s amazing. So you’re obviously on tour now, but how did this tour come about? When I first saw that Logic, G-Eazy, Yo Gotti and YG were going on tour together, I was surprised.
L: Yeah, it’s rare! Well management put it together and my manager was like, “Me and G should do this tour together,” and we thought it’d be really good to bring our fan bases together, and after that we just thought, “Man, who are some awesome people that could be a part of this?” And we came up with Yo Gotti and YG.
J: Any collaborations coming out between all of you?
L: We’ll see! Me and G were talking about doing a song together, so that’d be pretty cool.
