About two years after Lonesome River Band’s “Turn on a Dime” made it on the Billboard Top 10 Bluegrass Album Chart, the band will now perform at the Jewel Box Summer Concert Series’ last show Friday.
The Historic Thomas Center, located at 302 NE Sixth Ave., will open its doors at 6:30 p.m., and the music will begin at 7:30 p.m., according to a press release. Tickets are $20, and visitors can bring wine or beer.
Though no members from the original 1982 group remain in the band, Sammy Shelor joined as a banjo player in 1990.
Shelor said the band, which has played on the set of “Late Show with David Letterman,” focuses on telling stories.
“Ninety-five percent of our music is about a woman, and the other 5 percent is about Jesus and moonshine,” Shelor, 53, said.
Brandon Rickman, 39, joined the group in 2001 after Shelor called him and said the band needed a new guitarist.
Rickman, who became interested in music at the age of 11, said he enjoys being the band’s main songwriter, even though it can sometimes be more tiring than fun.
“It’s just like home,” he said.
He said Lonesome River Band, which played at the Historic Thomas Center last year, puts a modern twist on the classic bluegrass style.
“You will probably leave not even thinking you just heard a bluegrass show,” he said.
