A women’s empowerment and support group will hold its first gathering today.
The free group will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Dreyer’s DKI, located at 7325 NW 13th Blvd.
Nancy Bocalan, the event’s curator, partnered with Kingdom Ministries Embassy, a nonprofit based in Athens, Alabama, to create the group.
The embassy is not a church or religion; its purpose is to empower people to become leaders in their communities, said Roderick Howell, the savant at KME.
Howell said he met Bocalan after she began classes at KME, where he noticed her ability to help women identify and pursue their gifts.
“The women who go will not only be enlightened, but will also be inspired,” he said.
The group, Bocalan said, is structured around a dialogue that allows guests to speak freely about themselves.
Bocalan said she will start the discussion by sharing her experience of moving to the U.S. from the Philippines. She will also draw from leadership books and Bible passages.
Participants do not need to be religious to benefit from the support group, she said.
Bocalan said her personal struggles are evidence of the power within women.
“We may have different beliefs,” she said, “but we all go through the same troubles in life.”
