The UF drama club Florida Players will present Timothy Mason’s play, “Only You,” this weekend.

The play is a romantic comedy that entertains the idea of a modern-day fairytale.

Director Lauren Killer, a 21-year-old UF theatre senior, chose the romantic comedy because she loved how funny and quick-witted the dialogue was.

However, the humor can present the actors with their own dilemmas.

“The hardest part of the play was trying not to laugh throughout the scenes,” Jordan Sison, a 19-year-old UF acting freshman and one of the play’s actors, wrote in an email.

As a first-time director of someone else’s work, Killer faced her own unique challenges.

Not only did she have to deal with interpreting another author’s play, but she also had the ups and downs of being completely in charge.

“On one hand, there’s no one to argue with,” Killer wrote in an email. “On the other hand, there’s no one to tell me exactly what the right thing to do is.”

She wants the audience to not only laugh but be happy.

“Laughing is amazing, but it doesn’t necessarily indicate happiness,” she wrote. “I want it to entertain people and bring them joy.”

Performances are Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Squitieri Studio Theatre in the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

Tickets are free and can be reserved online.
