With limited tickets remaining, the Hippodrome State Theatre is looking like the place to be Saturday night.
“The Sound of Music” will be the featured film at the Hippodrome Cinema’s “Cocktails & Classics” event this weekend.
The “Cocktails & Classics” event began two years ago and recurs every couple months featuring classic films people may not have been able to see on the big screen, said Sarah Kunkler, the cinema director for the Hippodrome.
As the cinema director, Kunkler is in charge of picking which films are featured, and she said she chose “The Sound of Music” to kick off the spring season.
The Hippodrome tries to tie the films with seasons or holidays occurring around the time of the event, she said. In October, the “Cocktails & Classics” event featured the film “Birds,” and in December, the film was “White Christmas.”
With a $20 ticket, individuals are granted admission to the event, hors d’oeuvres and a specialty cocktail, which is not released until the event, is available for those of age. The cinema seats 75 people and typically sells out for special events like this, Kunkler said.
The reception will begin an hour before the film, and individuals can enjoy appetizers catered by Celebrations Catering while mingling with one another. It will be held on the first floor with cocktail tables set up with festive centerpieces, a red carpet and decorations meant to match the theme of the film, she said.
“It’s a pretty minimal setup, but it looks pretty nice,” Kunkler said.
Doors will open at 6 p.m.
Attire for the event is not specified, but people are encouraged to dress-up to match the theme of the movie or era it came out in.
One of Kunkler’s favorite parts about the Hippodrome is the diversity of its programming.
“We have a lot of different stuff that goes on for a lot of different age groups,” she said.
Lucy Mills, 49, is attending “The Sound of Music” showing, which is her first “Cocktails & Classics” event, with her daughters Ann, 22, and Allison, 20.
Mills heard about the event through a Facebook post from one of her daughter’s friends.
“‘The Sound of Music’ is what appealed to me, and the idea of a cocktail included in the ticket price,” she said.
“Cocktails & Classics” is one of Kunkler’s favorite events because of the high levels of audience interaction.
With guests often arriving in elaborate costumes, she said “sometimes, people take it to the extreme.”
