UF students will perform ballet, hip hop and West African dances Saturday.
About 70 dancers from UF’s School of Theatre + Dance will take the stage at the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art for its first Harn Museum of Dance event. The free dance, which takes place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., combines the visual arts and dance.
Joan Frosch, the director of the UF Center for World Arts, said she’s spent hundreds of hours preparing for the dance. She hopes students gain appreciation for the visual arts.
“We also love to give our students and our community another way to understand dance and celebrate dance in the world,” Frosch said.
Maripili Rodriguez, a UF dance junior, said she’s been practicing her modern dance piece, “To feel… So WE can be,” by Mia Redding, since Fall. This weekend, she will don a white top and black skirt for her dance.
“It’s nice because it’s putting an ending to hard work we’ve put into the piece, and we’ve been practicing since Fall, so it’s our last hurrah,” the 21-year-old said.
Minji Ku, a UF biology sophomore, said she plans on attending the event.
“I really love the arts,” the 20-year-old said. “I think it’s so cool how many different ways there are to express yourself. I’m not much of a dancer at all, so I love to watch.”
