A former UF student died Thursday morning after his motorcycle crashed into a large truck near UF Health Shands Hospital.

At about 9 a.m., 22-year-old Andreas Dinopoulos drove his Kawasaki motorcycle eastbound on Southwest Archer Road, Gainesville Police spokesman Officer Ben Tobias wrote in an email.

A large box truck turned onto Newell Drive, and Dinopoulos crashed into the truck’s rear wheel, Tobias said.

Because the crash was so close to the hospital, multiple medical professionals and a doctor gave Dinopoulos first aid, Tobias said.

Though he wore a helmet, Dinopoulos was later pronounced dead at the hospital, Tobias said.

Dinopoulos enrolled at UF in Summer 2012 as a finance major. His last semester was Fall 2013, UF spokeswoman Janine Sikes wrote in an email.

His family was notified, Tobias said.

His father, Elias Dinopoulos, teaches economics at UF’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Sikes wrote.

Witnesses told GPD the truck had nearly finished its turn when Dinopoulos made impact, Tobias said.

They said his speed was a likely factor in the crash, Tobias said.

A traffic homicide investigation will not be completed for several weeks, he said.

The road was closed for about three hours.
