Krewes and scrums are coming to Gainesville.
Frank2016 runs today until Friday and features breakout sessions called scrums and collaborative groups called krewes.
To attend frank2016, students had to first apply and, if invited, were charged for a ticket that cost a reduced price of about $150.
Ann Christiano, the creative director of frank2016, said the event invites communicators to discuss social change, including improvements to public health and treatment of minorities.
Frank is an organization within UF’s College of Journalism and Communications, and its annual event includes scholars, artists and company executives, said Christiano.
Aaron Zeiler, a 20-year-old UF public relations junior, said he spent two months in the District of Columbia working on a campaign for Tobacco Free Kids.
He will speak at frank2016 about his attempt to influence tobacco policy, but Zeiler said he is most excited for the scrums.
“I think there’s so much we can do, and I love getting everyone’s opinion,” he said.
After a topic is discussed during one of the event’s frank talks, people can then share their perspective during the scrums, he said.
Krewes, on the other hand, are groups of people assigned before frank to make sure every session includes a familiar face, Zeiler said.
“Kind of like camp, where krewes are your cabin but the whole cabin doesn’t go to craft time, and craft time is the scrums,” he said.
