After months of planning, organizations across campus are giving UF a chance to celebrate diversity.

Pride Student Union, Women’s Student Association, Student Government Women’s Affairs, the Hispanic Student Association and the Asian American Student Union are hosting general body meetings and events this week to give students the opportunity to explore diversity on campus. The organizations have been planning the week since October.

Estevan Torres, the president of the Hispanic Student Association, said the event is a welcome week for transfer and Innovation Academy students.

Torres, who is in IA, said he wanted to offer students a week to learn more about diversity on campus.

“It’s kind of a ‘welcome, let’s come together’ thing,” he said.

The Black Student Union, which was supposed to host an event Tuesday, will no longer be hosting an event, Torres said. He said BSU didn’t think members would be able to attend.

Student Body President Joselin Padron-Rasines said she hopes it becomes an annual event.

“I think it’s great that they’re getting together,” she said. “I think it’s a great opportunity for students.”

Alyssa Bethencourt, a UF telecommunication freshman, said she got involved in organizations during the Fall but is looking forward to taking a look at UF’s cultures.

The 18-year-old said it will be good for students to expand their knowledge of the different cultures on campus.

“There’s so many different kinds of people on campus,” she said. “Once you get to UF, there’s a huge emphasis on all the different cultures.”
