UF students may have access to free suits, heels and ties in time for the next Career Showcase.

UF Student Government is planning to launch the Gator Career Closet in Spring. The closet will allow students to borrow professional clothing and accessories for job interviews, said Nicholas Carré, Student Body treasurer.

While SG knows the clothes will be dry-cleaned every week, Carré said the other details have not been finalized. SG is trying to find a location for the closet and determine how long students will be able to borrow items before returning them.

To get student opinions about the name of the closet, how long clothing should be rented out for and other services that should be offered, SG posted a survey on Facebook on Oct. 29, he said. It received 120 responses.

He said there were fewer than five negative responses to the survey.

"It’s something students were interested in," he said.

To get clothes for the closet, SG will collect donations through clothing drives beginning next semester, Carré said.

"That’s how we’re going to kick it off," he said.

The Gator Career Closet will also partner with the Career Resource Center to help students make an outfit from the borrowed clothes, he said.

Alyssa Estraba, a UF athletic training freshman, said she thinks the lending closet is something she would use. Her high school helped students dress for interviews, too.

"If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t know the proper way of dressing either," the 19-year-old said.
