There’s a new pregnant virgin in town, and it’s not Mary.
CW’s "Jane the Virgin" premiered October 2014 and, since then, it’s been praised by fans and critics alike.
Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) is a 23-year-old Hispanic girl going to college while living in Miami with her mom Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) and grandmother Alba (Ivonne Coll). Jane had promised her grandmother she would wait until marriage to have sex to avoid being a struggling teenage mother like her own mom. However, that all ends when she goes to her gynecologist for a pap smear and instead accidentally gets artificially inseminated.
From the pilot, you’ll get hooked because there are other storylines that are just as intriguing. For one, the guy whose sperm Jane gets injected with happens to be the owner of Marbella, the hotel where she works as a waitress, and the gynecologist is his sister. Meanwhile, there is a killer on the loose who keeps targeting the Marbella, and Jane’s current long-term boyfriend is a cop who’s trying to unravel the mystery.
If it sounds like a "telenovela," that’s because it’s supposed to. The creators were loosely inspired by Venezuelan show "Juana la Virgen," but they adapted it to a satirical dramedy with telenovela moments and instances that poke fun at telenovelas. Although it has certain elaborate moments, the show is oddly refreshing with a quirky cast and and a fun color scheme.
I’m not usually a fan of cheesy TV shows, which is what I thought of "Jane the Virgin" before I watched it. But it has the perfect balance of drama, comedy and wit, and Golden Globe-winning actress Rodriguez makes Jane a strong young woman with aspirations that I find myself relating to.
