After a suicide took place last week, UF’s U Matter, We Care visited student senators at Tuesday night’s Student Senate meeting.
The organization told senators they should inform students they represent that help is available.
The group’s ambassadors discussed crisis-relief services available to students. Student Government also talked about the black student experience survey.
U Matter, We Care
Jason Feliciano and Hannah Lee, U Matter, We Care ambassadors, gave a presentation following a UF student suicide Wednesday.
"In light of a recent event that happened, it is important to look out for every Gator," Lee said.
Lee said it’s important for senators to be aware of the services U Matter, We Care offers.
"The students you guys represent might be contemplating suicide or hurting themselves," she said.
Students can refer those in crisis to U Matter, We Care anonymously, Feliciano said. If school and life become stressful, students can experience crisis.
"It can result in a breakdown and ultimately end in tragedy," he said.
Black Student Experience Survey
Student Body Treasurer Nicholas Carre and Student Body President Joselin Padron-Rasines gave presentations about the black student experience survey SG began promoting about a week ago.
Carre said senators need to promote the survey more. Some senators said his speech implied that he felt they didn’t care, which Carre apologized for.
Sen. Katelynd Todd (Independent, Health and Human Performance) said she shared the survey and only got four "likes" on Facebook.
"I’m feeling the same pain," she said.
