Under the chiming of Century Tower, students gathered to scribble letters of love and encouragement Monday.
Students visited the UF Campus Cursive tabling event on Turlington Plaza on Monday afternoon spreading words of kindness to help encourage and uplift students across UF. The table was piled with 103 love letters by the end of the day, exceeding the original goal of 50.
This was Campus Cursive’s first event as an organization, said co-director Molly Donovan, a UF journalism sophomore.
After hearing about a UF student’s suicide Wednesday, Donovan said she and Campus Cursive co-director Allie Seelig, 19, decided to create a way to help prevent any more from happening.
"Something as simple as a letter is huge," Donovan, 19, said. "You are not alone."
Students approached the table covered with a rainbow of letters and created their own to be placed around campus for students in need of some love.
The event also caught the attention of Students Advocating Informed Decisions. Its director, Halle Goodwin, encouraged members of the organization to participate in the event.
Some students who gathered at the event saw the impact the letters could have on fellow students.
"When you receive a compliment from a stranger, it makes your day," said Shannon Domfort, a 19-year-old UF health science and psychology sophomore.
Seelig, a UF biotechnology sophomore, said Campus Cursive’s members hope to continue the tradition of writing letters to people who need support.
