Tables in the Reitz Union glittered with sterling silver necklaces and bracelets.

On Tuesday, the Reitz Union Arts and Crafts Center hosted a jewelry sale in the union in hopes of cleaning out its inventory from previous semesters, said Kellan McLaughlin, a 20-year-old UF nursing senior who is a student manager for the center. The sale also served to let students know that the center, located in the basement, exists, said Julia Campitelli, 19, who works for the center.

"A lot of people go down into the (Reitz Union) basement and are like, ‘Oh, what is this?’" the UF advertising sophomore said.

The Arts and Crafts Center offers UF students creative classes, like jewelry making, at a discount rate. By selling the jewelry, it can make room for more popular activities’ supplies, such as ceramics, McLaughlin said.

Students could buy the jewelry at a discounted price. Those who bought one item could purchase another for $1, she said. Most of the items sold were sterling silver, silk and cotton scarves, shawls and bed spreads.

The center declined to comment on how much money it made from the sale.

UF exploratory freshman Maria Grosso said she went to the Reitz looking to buy rings for her mother and sister.

"They really love jewelry, and this would make a perfect gift," the 19-year-old said.
