Redshirt sophomore running back Adam Lane has been granted his release from Florida, the school announced Sunday.
According to a statement from head coach Jim McElwain, Lane is dealing with family issues and wants to be closer to home.
“As you’ve heard me say many times family comes first in this program,” McElwain said in the statement, “and we will grant him his release and we will do everything we can do to help him.”
The Winter Haven native saw limited action in 2014, carrying the ball only 24 times for 181 yards and a touchdown in seven games.
Lane’s biggest achievement was his breakout performance in the Birmingham Bowl, rushing for 109 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries on his way to earning the game’s MVP award.
Lane was expected to be Florida’s No. 3 running back in 2015 behind junior Kelvin Taylor and freshman Jordan Scarlett. The Gators now have four scholarship running backs on their roster in Taylor, Scarlett, freshman Jordan Cronkrite and senior Mark Herndon.
Adam Lane rushes into the end zone for a touchdown during Florida's 28-20 win against East Carolina on Jan. 3 in the Birmingham Bowl at Legion Field.
