The Marston Science Library is introducing new computers by adding Mac desktops along with its pre-existing Dell desktops.

Sara Gonzalez, a librarian at Marston, said the Mac computers will supplement the library’s collection of Dell computers in order to better accommodate students with the understanding that certain applications run better on Mac computers.

The computers, funded by a collaboration of UF Information Technology and the campus libraries, are intended to bring more learning and study opportunities to the library.

“I think that will be useful for the students that used Macs most of their lives,” said Jenny Wu, a 19-year-old UF business administration sophomore. Wu, a Mac user, said that students won’t be confused due to changing computers.

Some PC users disagree with the library’s use of funds to purchase the new Mac laptops, including 18-year-old Taylor Thelander, a PC user.

“We could have used that money for something else because most college students already have a laptop of their own,” said Thelander.

Thelander believes that the funds used to purchase the new Macs could have been used on other library resources.

“We’ll have three rows of Dell desktops and one row of Mac desktops,” Gonzalez said. “We’re not transitioning to Apple completely, we’re just adding some into the mix.”
