Gainesville police responded to reports of an armed robbery Tuesday afternoon, which ultimately led to the suspect being shot by police.

Just after 3 p.m., officers received multiple reports of an armed robbery at the Post Office on 1401 N. Main St., GPD spokesman Officer Ben Tobias wrote in an email. A man said to be in his 50s entered the business, pulled out a gun and demanded money.

The man then left the area on a bike as police responded to the area, Tobias said.

GPD did not have a police dog working at the time and requested one from the Alachua County Sheriff's Office. A Sheriff's Office deputy who was handling the dog was heading to the scene when they noticed a person matching the description of the suspect in front of the Winn Dixie on 2300 N. Main St.

Witnesses told police the suspect pointed the gun at the deputy, Tobias said. The deputy shot and hit the suspect, who was then taken to UF Health Shands Hospital where he remains in stable condition.

The investigation is ongoing.
