While some internships lead to suits, briefcases and conference rooms, Natasha Collazos ended up at the Institute of Hispanic-Latino Culture, the home of her internship and upcoming art exhibition.
“From Mariposa to Mujerista: You are every woman and every woman is you” will highlight Latina empowerment through art from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the institute, commonly known as La Casita, at 1504 W. University Ave.
“More than anything, I just want to be able to educate everyone that comes in,” said Collazos, a UF women studies senior.
Collazos’ exhibition will have two main parts: an art show displaying the works of at least six local, nonlocal and historical Latina artists and an area for guests to create his or her own piece of art.
“What I want to incorporate through everything, out of all of this, is for people to have acknowledgement in the power of not only Latina artists, but Latina women,” Collazos, 22, said.
Collazos was the driving force of this event, but she said she received help from the artists, the ambassadors at La Casita and Gisselle Bermudes, a La Casita ambassador and public relations director for the show.
Bermudes, 21, said that after focusing on Hispanic Heritage Month last year, she wanted to branch out and learn more about Latina empowerment this year.
“This is a project I’ve been wanting to work on for a long time,” said Bermudes, a UF sociology and Latin American studies senior.
