Maya Beiser has played the cello with the world’s top symphonies. She’s performed in Carnegie Hall and a sold-out show in Brooklyn Academy of Music Next Wave Festival.
Her next stop: Gainesville.
Beiser, a world-renowned cellist, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the University Auditorium, performing from her critically acclaimed album “Uncovered.”
Tickets are $10 for UF students and $20 to $35 for the public.
Classically trained, Beiser said her musical taste expanded when she first heard Janis Joplin as a teenager.
“Somehow Janis’ unique, raw expression snuck its way into the inner shrine where, until then, only the likes of Bach and Schubert were allowed to enter,” Beiser wrote in an email.
Influenced by Joplin, Pink Floyd and classical musicians Johannes Brahms and Franz Schubert, Beiser said she works to influence and reinvent the way people think about the cello.
Karisa McKinney, a 20-year-old UF music performance sophomore, said she purchased a ticket because she enjoys hearing string instruments. She said comments on YouTube describe Beiser’s music as mesmerizing.
“That’s exactly what her music is,” McKinney said. “Mesmerizing and beautiful.”
