Members of the UF community will hit the stage tonight for a show benefitting graduate student organizations.
Doors open at 8:30 p.m. with a $5 cover at The Jam at 817 W. University Ave. Idylwild Band and Los Panas 352, bands with members in the UF sociology department, will perform. All benefits from the show will go toward funding sociology, criminology and law organizations.
Cristobal Gonzalez, the 22-year-old organizer of the event, is a singer and guitarist for Los Panas 352.
“The main focus was to bring the department together and raise whatever we could,” Gonzalez said.
The band plays mostly Latin music with a heavy emphasis on percussion and ska influences.
“It’s basically rage party music,” Gonzalez said.
Eduardo “Eddy” Arenas, co-owner of The JAM, plays bass for Los Panas 352.
Arenas, 36, said he is looking forward to hosting the event. This is the first official show for their band.
“The JAM is very excited to continue to work with the many student organizations at the University of Florida to bring music, arts and culture to Gainesville,” Arenas said.
Idylwild, an Americana group, features Charles Gattone, an associate professor and associate chair of the UF sociology department, on keyboard.
Proceeds from the event will go to The Aggregate, The Syndicate and the Florida Society of Social Sciences, commonly known as F3S.
The Aggregate is an organization for sociology graduate students, and The Syndicate is for criminology graduate students.
Gonzalez said that F3S will use funds from the show toward the Conference of Social Sciences, the main event it hosts every year.
