Gainesville Police announced Thursday that two UF students were involved in Wednesday’s scooter crash on Southwest 19th Avenue.

Just after 4 p.m., Sydney Sokolsky, 18, was driving her scooter Wednesday with Hali McKinley-Lester, 18, on Southwest 19th Avenue when a beige Chevrolet Cobalt hit them at the Southwest 34th Street intersection, Gainesville Police spokesman Officer Ben Tobias wrote in an email.

Sokolsky remained at UF Health Shands Hospital Thursday morning with head trauma and a broken femur, but was in stable condition and thankful to be alive, Tobias said.

It is unclear whether McKinley-Lester remained in the hospital.

The driver of the car, Allison Gehan, sustained minor injuries, Tobias said. It is unknown whether she is still in the hospital.

“It’s tragic,” Tobias said. “Each of us has to make sure we keep our eyes extra open, especially during rush hour on the busier roadways.”

Police are still investigating and have not determined the cause of the crash.
