Santa Fe College Senate passed resolutions, approved funding and discussed the standing of Young Americans for Liberty at Wednesday’s meeting.
Senators approved a $705 overflow request by the Respiratory Care Club to attend a conference in Daytona Beach. The request was on last week’s agenda but was not approved because the number of senators fell below quorum.
Sen. Matthew Fernandez tried motioning to reverse last week’s decision to vote Young Americans for Liberty back into good standing.
Fernandez said his motion was based on Sen. Lucas Jewell’s apology for abruptly leaving a previous Senate meeting. Fernandez said he thought Jewell’s apology last week for his actions was sarcastic.
Senators debated on whether to punish only Jewell or the club itself before deciding to move onto other items on the agenda.
Senate decided to address the issue later, but numbers fell below quorum before it could.
Senators approved a resolution to thank the Santa Fe administration for working with Gainesville’s Regional Transit System to avoid tuition hikes in order to improve bus access to and from campus.
The college proposed to add service hours to bus routes 39 and 62, and to combine routes 17 and 43 to provide a streamlined route from the Rosa Parks Downtown Station to the college.
“I think it’s always good when students get things that they need,” said Sen. Melvin Carey, the resolution’s author. “At the end of the day, all students want to do is get back and forth from school.”
Resolutions were approved as well to increase the visibility of a Santa Fe sign on the corner of Northwest 39th Avenue and Northwest 91st Street and to make campus more accessible to students with visual impairments.
