University Police arrested a UF student Wednesday after he reportedly broke a mirror on a Student Nighttime Auxiliary Patrol van.
Just before 1:30 a.m., police responded to Continuum Apartments after hearing a report from a SNAP driver that Cory Tanner Baach, 20, broke one of the van’s mirrors. Baach ran toward West University Avenue and was stopped by officers at Southwest Sixth Street and West University Avenue, according to an arrest report.
Lydia Toussaint, a SNAP employee in the van, said Baach was one of two people denied a ride because they didn’t have a Continuum Apartments residential ID, which is needed for a ride from the apartment complex.
“He started raising his voice and demanding that we take him to SAE (fraternity),” the 19-year-old political science sophomore said.
Toussaint said when the van tried to drive away, Baach jumped on the passenger’s side of the van and forced the van to stop.
“We called UPD, and he got really angry and he smashed the mirror with his hand,” Toussaint said.
Toussaint said Baach was bleeding, and a small piece of skin was left on the mirror.
Baach is a third-year UF management major, said UF spokesman Steve Orlando.
The mirror damages are valued at about $100, according to the report.
Police arrested Baach on a charge of criminal mischief.
Officers took Baach to the Alachua County Jail. He was released later Wednesday morning on his own recognizance.
