Pirates of the Caribbean 5 has officially begun filming in Australia. Before you groan over the extension of another series, read up on the synopsis. This is not a Captain Jack Sparrow solo film like “On Stranger Tides.” This film gets back to where “At World’s End” left us – and we may see some beloved characters once more.
Johnny Depp returns as the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow, facing ill omens when deadly ghost pirates led by his old enemy, Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) escape from the Devil’s Triangle set to kill every pirate at sea – including him. Jack’s survival hinges on him locating the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that will grant him control over the seas.
Also returning on the venture are Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, Kevin R. McNally as Gibbs and Stephen Graham as Scrum. Joining the cast are Kara Scoldelario (the Maze Runner) in an unknown role and Brendan Thwaites as Henry, a young soldier hoping to reconnect with his father, Davy Jones.

Orlando Bloom has not been confirmed for the film, but the movie’s not slated for release until 2017 and we have very little information to go on. Keira Knightley is not returning, but the very idea of their son being involved brings the Pirates tale back to where it began.
Actors believe that “Pirates 5” will be a soft reboot of the original trilogy. Remember, Davy Jones is cursed so that he can only set foot on land every ten years. “At World’s End” was released in 2007,so “Dead Men Tell No Tales” takes place exactly ten years later, which makes the Turner family plotline plausible.
As filming continues, more and more photos and information will be released. It’s remarkable how many people judge based on basic synopses and a name like “Pirates 5.” We shouldn’t. The franchise is one of the most successful Disney has ever produced, with the first film smashing domestic records in 2003 and the rest closely following. Returning to the roots of the story – Will, Elizabeth, Jack and Barbossa – could very well be the facelift the series needs.
“Dead Men Tell No Tales,” directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, will be released on July 7, 2017. Only time will tell if the stories still hold the magic they once did.
