Santa Fe College held its Spring convocation Monday, during which it highlighted the achievements of the previous semester and addressed issues that the college plans to combat.

Hundreds of people — mostly Santa Fe faculty and staff — attended the event in the Fine Arts Hall, which was hosted by the college’s president, Jackson Sasser.

Going over the highs and lows of 2014, Sasser said goodbye to 40 retired Santa Fe staff members and greeted the 30 new employees.

He also spoke about what the college considers to be its best attributes, including the college’s food pantry, which provides meals for free or at a reduced cost. Sasser also said the relationship between Santa Fe and UF has contributed to the college’s success.

Later in the convocation, Student Affairs Vice President Naima Brown gave a presentation on sexual violence. She discussed how Santa Fe will work with students, faculty and staff to battle this issue in 2015. Programs on how to handle and prevent sexual violence will start this semester. Some of these will be mandatory programs that students, staff and faculty will be required to participate in, she said.

“While incidents of sexual assault may not take place in our nonexistent dorm rooms, too many of our students have been victimized,” Brown said.
