Santa Fe College senators have started to announce which student government positions they will be running for.
Before Wednesday’s Student Senate meeting, Benjamin Myers, internal affairs director, told the Alligator he is running for Student Body president and plans to help Santa Fe be its best by ensuring the college is “running at tip-top shape in the right direction.” However, he did not announce this during the meeting.
Sen. Matthew Fernandez announced his decision to run for pro-tempore during Wednesday’s Senate meeting, which may have disqualified him.
Unless a judicial review is submitted to Chief Justice Elana Gold, Fernandez will still be able to run, but Sen. Connor Levine said he doubts any senators will submit one.
Senate President Jeremy Pierce also announced he and other senators will open an investigation, which will take about a week, into where financial aid tuition fees are spent.
Pierce also announced that Tuesday, the Santa Fe Board of Trustees approved an amendment to Rule 2.8, which protects students from discrimination for their sexual orientation.
The amendment’s writer, Sen. Wallace Mazon, waited roughly three months for the amendment to be signed.
“It took a really long time, but I’m glad I was the person that did write it,” Mazon said. He also credited Pierce for helping him, saying, “He did a lot of the work.”
